Ren's Birthday Fashion Portrait Shoot in the Studio

I always consider it a privilege to be able to create a fashion portfolio or studio portrait. It's a very important occasion for most people and not something I ever take lightly. It is also a very special feeling when a friend and artist asks you if you would photograph their daughter for their birthday; and to have the photo session on the big day! That's how it happened and Ren's Mum had to do the hard work of  keep the morning of her birthday free - for a surprise - and then get the wardrobe sorted for the secret shoot!

We all had a great time and I took the opportunity to make a mother and daughter portrait too; how could you let a chance like that slip by! The shoot itself was a customised version of one of  modelling packages here; I can make a custom special event for you too. My favourite shots from the shoot are below.

Photographing Hotel Interiors in Prague; and some Fashion Too

Interiors with fashion and lifestyle I should say; and those hotel rooms really are to die for. Well pretty much everything in Prague is to die for, so in some ways it's almost better - scratch that - easier to stay in the hotel.. But why would you when every journey through the streets and parks of Prague is an adventure.
On these shots for my client White Caviar life (WCL); we worked with a minimum of equipment. I chose to balance the light in rooms using portable speedlights while working to maintain the intimate and luxurious feeling of each room photographed; which was very important to WCL and myself. Essentially we came to have a vision for the architecture of the hotels and Prague. This is what we sort to show through luxurious hotel photography and fashion & lifestyle images. As you can see here and over on the travel pages of my website not all the imagery was created in the beautiful hotels. Our goal was to build a library of images to use across social media platforms as well as the WCL website, and so we also ventured out into Prague itself. Like what you see? There are many more images on my website here - kentjohnsonphotography.com.au/Travel/

Male Modelling Portfolio on Location, Sydney, Australia.

I have said it before and I am happy to say it again; I really enjoy shooting male model portfolios. I like shooting folios for the women too, of course; but I find guys have a completely different approach to being photographed which naturally comes out in the way the pictures work. They are more masculine; well no surprise there! Well at least my shots work toward a masculine style of photography, and creative too. James and I had a great time doing this shoot for his folio and it also helped him land an agent which is exactly what we wanted the shots to do. Need a folio, hit me up; I love making these pictures. PS, we also shot a Video Headshot + Agency Digitals, as seen below, BOTH of which are a current BONUS, so don't delay, BOOK NOW! 0433 796 863 kent@artcommunication.com.au
Headshot in black and white - Male modelling portfolio by Kent Johnson, Sydney, Australia.
This is what James had to say after shooting with me over on my Facebook page,
"I recently did a shoot with Kent and the results were outstanding. Kent has the ability to spot and create shots that a less experienced photographer simply would not be able to pull off. Kent is also very easy to work with and has a good sense of humour. We had a few laughs throughout the shoot which is always helpful as far as getting loose and creating cool shots. Overall highly recommended!"https://www.facebook.com/Kent-Johnson-Photography-reviews/

Industrial Fashion - Black & Blue Red Cherry's Too..

Industrial area photoshoot with an empahasis on blue red and black. Marrickville Sydney, Cherry Dress, Leather Jacket, Sunglasses, with Fashion Blogger vivalaViv. Photographed by Kent Johnson.
Viv loves pictures taken full length and in full sun. I like pictures with drama and a sense of mystery. And if I get a chance, I make them. This is a shot from back in late 2015 that I love, and edited at the time. Looking through the folder today - more or less by chance - I notice there is a whole slew of great shots made in this exact spot that really should be seen. I do a very simple edit on two of them and then re-edit my original image select the same to match. This is a location I have scouted many times and photographed very near by, but as the blue pallets in the background come and go, it's not always a viable spot for a shot. On this particular afternoon though with the blue shade, blue sky and blue pallets, it's all perfect to set off the black and cherry reds of the outfit and make up, for another great collaboration between Vivienne and myself.

Finding Creative Inspiration in Everyday Moments.

Where do creative ideas come from? They are the basis of good pictures and they are certainly not born in isolation. My ideas at least are often a convergence of what I have seen, studied, experienced, that are then gelled into form by something.. Like last night. It's Sunday, I am walking down Crown Street near the Surry Hills primary school. The weather is rainy, it's dark so it's just the glow of street lights.. Then across the road, I notice a young woman wearing a, white with black polka dots pants suit striding ahead of a group of four. She looks great out in front; dark hair, tall, immaculately turned out. I drag my eyes away and search the trailing group to see it's composition, how many girls, guys? It's all guys! It's one immaculately turned out woman leading a tight knit group of four guys who are themselves engaged in cross conversation between themselves; perhaps that is why they are lagging back. There is a great animation between the group and an invisible thread tying them to the woman striding ahead in the polka dot pant's suit. It's a fantastic vision and it's real! Too real for my liking; the guys are wearing jeans and sweatshirts, she looks great, maximum effort; they look pretty unexceptional, but hey, it is an Australian story.. (Sorry guys, I know we do try sometimes, myself included.)

So why am I writing all this down? In part it's so I remember the scene a little better, and also to ask a question. Does this scene, this tableaux sound at all familiar? I ask because to me it really does. As soon as I saw it was only men following the woman, and the distance, and the communing of the men, my mind referenced the storehouse of images that lives somewhere in my head. And it came up with this image by Ruth Orkin, American girl in Italy.  www.orkinphoto.com/american-girl/
Though the picture in my head was not as finely detailed as the actual image itself.. I also wrongly mentally attributed this image to a French photographer who is equally famous for "stolen moment" pictures, the photographer Robert Doisneau. Arguably Robert's most famous picture is Le baiser de l'hotel de ville (Kiss by the Hotel de Ville).. and I am pretty certain that it is because I am familiar with these photographs and similar great works of photography that I was able to see a photograph when I saw the men led by the woman in polka dots last night. All of which makes for a bit of a which came first, the chicken or the egg kind of situation.

Of course looking at this famous image this morning I can see how the woman's stride struck a cord for me. The central four men, the two on each side of the woman have a dialogue that centres on the woman; and no doubt that was happening too, but between the men themselves last night. So something very different really but also great similar energies, at least as I saw them.

Will I do anything with the vision I saw that I am now sharing here, I really don't know? I am often inspired by things I see that I would like to work on in a shot; and sometimes I do (just click here); but mostly the ideas simply get stored in my head, waiting for a moment, an instant when they will inform the way I create an image that I am actually working on and make it better. And that for me is how inspiration really works, in the background, the subconscious, informing and creating new takes and hopefully new classics. Well you have to dream, don't you!
